Physical description

Maroon leather card case embossed with 'CD' in gold on the front. The card case came in a box. The lining of the case is made with moire or watered silk.

Object history note

The card case is part of a set of personal possessions which belonged to Charles Dickens when he lived at Gads Hill. The card case is one of 7 objects contained in the box including a fruit knife, a pencil, an ink well, a nutmeg box, and a seal. The objects are all presented in a maroon leather presentation box with red velvet and ivory satin interior and gold edging, the underside of the lid is inscribed: 'Mappin &Webb Ltd, Queen Victoria Street, London' and a silver plate attached inscribed: 'The Property of Sterling Offices Ltd, Reinsurance Brokers, 25 Birchin Lane, London, EC3'. Accompanied with letters of authentication from Georgina Hogarth.
Mappin and Webb is a British jewellers and silversmith that has been operating since 1775.
