- This publication, 'Arctic explorations in the years 1853, '54, '55' published in 1868 was owned by Charles Dickens. Written by Elisha Kent Kane about his experience as a member of two Arctic expeditions to rescue the explorer Sir John Franklin, this was a popular book in the late 1800s. Kane organised and headed the second rescue expedition suffering from scurvy, and at times near death, to charter the coasts of Smith Sound (later called Kane Basin) and traveller farther north than any other Western explorer had done up to that time.
