- Brief description
- Life and Adventures of Oliver Twiss: the Workhouse Boy by T. P. Prest, 1839
- Label
- Edward Lloyd was a London publisher famous for his 'penny dreadfuls' (cheap, popular stories of adventure or horror for the working class) including 'Sweeney Todd'. In the 1830s when Dickens first became famous, Lloyd took advantage of lax copyright laws to publish knock-off versions of Dickens's stories sold much cheaper than Dickens's copies. In Oliver Twiss many characters are similar to those from Oliver Twist, such as "Solomons", who was based on Fagin. The similarity of the plots suggest Lloyd and his writer, Thomas Peckett Prest, read Dickens's monthly instalments when they released and based their imitation on Dickens's plot.
