Karmenu Vassallo was a Maltese poet, journalist, and Labour party politician who translated A Tale of Two Cities between February 1948 and September 1950. Maltese, spoken on the island of Malta, is a Semitic language related to Arabic and Hebrew. It is the only Semitic language that is an official language of the European Union and the only Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet (the alphabet English uses).
