Brief description
Scéal fá Ḋá Ċaṫair [A Tale of Two Cities]
Label
This Irish translation of A Tale of Two Cities was published in 1933, after Ireland's independence from the UK but before the modern Republic of Ireland was created in 1937. The Irish language (also called Gaelic) suffered under British rule and even today English is used by most people in Ireland. The Irish government established An Gúm ('the Scheme') in 1925 as a company tasked with publishing literature in Irish including many translations of English works like Dracula, Wuthering Heights, and Dickens's stories. This translation is written in 'Gaelic type', a version of the Latin alphabet with different letter shapes.
