- Dickens's death in 1870 left his last novel, Edwin Drood, unfinished. Many speculated the disappeared Drood was murdered by his uncle, John Jasper. The Dickens Fellowship staged a 'trial' of Jasper in Covent Garden in January 1914 with enormous media interest. On 29 April the Fellowship branch in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania held their own mock trial. The Philadelphia judge was a real-life Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Unlike the British trial which found Jasper guilty of Manslaughter, the Pennsylvania court dismissed the charges.
