Brief description
Perfumed playbill for Edward Stirling's production of A Christmas Carol, 1871
Label
This playbill announces the first production of A Christmas Carol after Dickens’s death in June 1870. Stage adaptations of the Carol were overwhelming successful after the story's initial release in 1843, but had fallen silent from theatre stages in 1850s and 60s. There had been a reluctance to stage ‘semi sacred matters’. The playbill carries a full page advertisement for Eugene Rimmel’s perfumers and the paper was perfumed with one of his scents.
