- Dickens's death in 1870 left his last novel unfinished. The plot concerned the disappearence of Edwin Drood and his supposed murder. The chief suspect was John Jasper, Drood's uncle and an opium addict. On 7 January 1914 the Dickens Fellowship staged a 'trial' of Jasper featuring many famous literary figures of the day, such as the murder-mystery writer G. K. Chesterton (who was the judge), Hilaire Belloc, Max Pemberton, and George Bernard Shaw (the jury foreman).
