- Brief description
- The Peregrinations of Pickwick by William Leman Rede, 1837
- Label
- Dickens's early works were very popular in the theatre. This was perhaps because his earlier stories, especially The Pickwick Papers, were essentially a series of loosely-connected amusing scenes which playwrights could pick, edit, cut, or rearrange to fit a stage performance. William Leman Rede's adaptation of The Pickwick Papers opened at the Adelphi theatre before Dickens had even finished the story - only thirteen of the twenty 'numbers' or monthly installments had been released.
