Brief description
The Peregrinations of Pickwick by William Leman Rede, 1837
Label
Dickens's early works were very popular in the theatre. This was perhaps because his earlier stories, especially The Pickwick Papers, were essentially a series of loosely-connected amusing scenes which playwrights could pick, edit, cut, or rearrange to fit a stage performance. William Leman Rede's adaptation of The Pickwick Papers opened at the Adelphi theatre before Dickens had even finished the story - only thirteen of the twenty 'numbers' or monthly installments had been released.
