Brief description
Keys to the Drood Mystery by Edwin Charles, 1908
Label
Dickens's death in 1870 left his last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished. Many people have since speculated what happened to Drood, who mysteriously disappears in the story. The Keys to the Drood Mystery was published in 1908, the same year as a stage adaptation by J. Comyns Carr. The two works reignited a flurry of debate about Drood's fate, causing B. W. Matz, editor of The Dickensian (the Dickens studies journal) to "beg" that "this correspondence must now cease".
