Brief description
Programme and playbill for performance of Pickwick-klubi (Pickwick Club): an Estonian operetta by Grigori Santori, 1978
Label
Dickens was first translated into Estonian in 1882 with A Christmas Carol. This opera, composed by Grigory Mihailovich Shantyr or Šantõr, was adapted from Marta Sillaots's 1948 translation of The Pickwick Papers. The Soviets, who occupied Estonia in 1940, favoured Dickens partly because Marx (who lived in London at the same time as Dickens) praised his writing. Lenin, meanwhile, disliked its "bourgeois sentimentality".
