- Eight years after Lionel Bart’s musical version of Oliver Twist first hit the stage, Sir Carol Reed directed this film adaptation. For many, it is this version which has embedded the story of Oliver Twist into our cultural consciousness. The film promotion declared it offered ‘a new vision…which fulfils and enhances everything Dickens had in mind’ even though certain plot elements were simplified and Fagin was reprieved.
