- Mary Boyle met Dickens in 1849. She formed part of his amateur theatrical group and wrote articles for his magazine Household Words. Her cousin, Eleanor Vere Boyle illustrated this presentation copy. Eleanor was a well-known Scottish artist, illustrating Tennyson’s May Queen and Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales, as well as her own work such as her collection of 12 essays called A Peacock’s Presence.
