Brief description: Charles Dickens's acting copy of 'Turning The Tables' playscript
Label: A prompt-book is a copy of the script with all the cues for all actors and technical staff, used by the stage manager to manage the overall performance. This copy belonged to Dickens but the notes are by Thomas Coe, an actor in the 'Haymarket Company' to which Ellen Ternan, Dickens's supposed mistress, belonged. Turning the Tables was written by famous playwright John Poole. By 1850, when this book is signed by Coe and Dickens, Poole had given up writing and lived in Paris, his health damaged by years of heavy drinking. Dickens would obtain a Civil List pension (an honorary pension paid by the government to noteworthy individuals) for Poole in December of that year.
