Brief description
Book of Common Prayer owned by Georgina Hogarth (Catherine Dickens's mother), 1862
Label
This book belonged to Georgina Hogarth, Catherine Dickens's mother. The story of Eve’s betrayal in the Garden of Eden encouraged stereotypes of women’s abilities. Although religious education was important to the Hogarth family, her father, George, thought women could cope with a fully rounded education. Catherine and her sisters, Mary and Georgina, were likely educated alongside pupils her father took in to supplement his income. They were also well-read, having access to books sent to George to review.

This is a rebound edition with the three books together. Inside is inscribed 'Georgina Hogarth' with a note by Catherine Dickens of her mother's death.
