- Dickens died in 1870, leaving his last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, unfinished. On 7 January 1914 the Dickens Fellowship and famous writers of the day staged a mock 'trial' of the character John Jasper, long-suspected to have murdered Drood in the novel. The trial dominated newspaper front pages, like this one from The Daily News & Leader. The Daily News was in fact founded by Dickens in 1846. In 1901 it was acquired by George Cadbury, the chocolate maker, and in 1912 it merged with the Morning Leader, hence the longer name.
