Brief description
Monthly part of 'Dombey and Son' in Dutch, No. 1, 1846
Label
Early in Dickens's writing career translations were already appearing in the Netherlands. The Pickwick Papers, which was published in 1837, was already in Dutch by 1840. Dombey and Son, first published October 1846, was translated by 'Boudewijn' that same year. Boudewijn attempted to 'improve' Dickens's writing - he did not think it was humorous enough for the Dutch. International editions rarely paid the author, leading Dickens to call for international copyright laws.
