- Some of Dickens's characters become more popular than the story they come from. Mr Micawber and Mrs Gamp are examples, as is Sam Weller from The Pickwick Papers. The character, who is a cheerful cockney who often spoke in dialect, appeared in dozens of plagiarisms, adaptations, and even reprints of Dickens's story containing only scenes with Weller in them. This unlicensed use of the character is for a joke-book, published by Orlando Hodgson, a printer of satirical pictures.
