The Battle of Life was the fourth of five 'Christmas Books' by Dickens (the most famous being A Christmas Carol). It was not as popular as the other Christmas stories. This is a dramatisation of the story by Albert Smith, Dickens's friend and tour manager. The title page specifically notes the adaption was made with Dickens's permission - Dickens had a long history with playwrights adapting his stories without permission or credit.
