- Brief description
- Charles Dickens's copy of the playscript 'Not so Bad as We Seem'
- Label
- Charles Dickens produced Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s play 'Not So Bad As We Seem'. It was first performed at a charity event in May 1851, attended by Queen Victoria, to raise money for the Guild of Literature and Art, which helped struggling writers and artists. This is Dickens's acting copy of the play and contains his and John Forster's revisions in both their hands. Dickens also took a lead role in the play as Lord Wilmot, with Wilkie Collins playing his butler: it was how the two men met.
