- Brief description
- Nicholas Nickleby, Volume 1, Mandarin Chinese translation
- Label
- Lin Shu, also known as Lin Qinnan, was a Chinese scholar and the first to translate many English novels into Chinese, including several Dickens novels. Lin did not speak English and instead relied on others to translate the texts aloud whilst he wrote the story. He did not translate Dickens into the spoken Chinese of his day but instead into Classical Chinese, the literary and poetic form of Chinese, comparable to translating into Shakespeare's English except much older. This is a later reprint of his 1908 Nicholas Nickleby translation.
