- This scrapbook titled 'Dickensana II’ was compiled by Frederic G. Kitton with content ranging from 1858-1903. This large volume is the second of four and part of the Frederic G. Kitton collection. Frederic George Kitton (1856-1904) was a noted Charles Dickens scholar, artist, and founding member of the Dickens Fellowship. He is best known for his illustrations of landscapes, scenes and sites associated with Charles Dickens, his illustrations for W. R. Hughes’s 'A Weeks Tramp in Dicken’s-land' (1891), and his numerous publications including 'Dickensiana: A bibliography of the literature relating to Charles Dickens and His Writings' (1886), 'Charles Dickens by Pen and Pencil' (1890), 'The Novels of Charles Dickens: A Bibliography and Sketch' (1897), 'Dickens and His Illustrators' (1899), and the posthumously published 'The Dickens Country' (1905). His death at age 48 was a great blow to the Dickens community and was lamented at length in the first edition of the Dickens Fellowship publication, The Dickensian.

The contents of this scrapbook are a remarkable collection of newspaper clippings, ephemera, and original drawings. This volume contains quite a lot of material relating to Gad’s Hill and Dickens’s death, including original Kitton sketches, care de visites and photographs.
The wide range of content includes: advertisements, magazine articles, original sketches by Kitton, original sketches of Dickens by Leslie Ward, photographs, carte de visites, manuscript material, a broadside, one of Dickens’s calling cards, Dickens’s signatures, real and facsimiles, copies of letters from the British Museum, the All Around Dickens Club membership material and ephemera, poetry, greeting cards, photos of Dickens, maps, material relating to the publication of Charles Dickens by Pen and Pencil, an acrostic, posters, a copy of the revived ‘Gad’s Hill Gazette’, artists proofs of an etching by Edwin Raffe of Woolner’s death mask Dickens bust, published memorials and a copy of The Empty Chair.
The topics covered in the newspaper clippings and magazine articles are no less varied, and include: Dickens’s homes and Gad’s Hill, Dickens’s personality, Grip the raven and his sale, people who knew or had met Dickens, Dickens as an actor, the sale of Dickens letters, Dickens and other authors including Thackery and Wilkie Collins, the All Around Dickens Club, Dickens’s readings including his reading desk, a series from The Ladies Home Journal by Mamie Dickens on her Father, Dickens’s marriage, Dickens’s illustrators, Dickens’s friends, locations associated with Dickens, anniversaries including Dickens’s birthday, Catherine Dickens, Dickens and food, Dickens as an editor, the Charles Dickens Mining Company, Dickens bazaars, Dickens’s ears, Dickens’s grave, the statue of Dickens and Little Nell by Edwin Elwell and Dickens’s funeral.
