- Brief description
- Presentation copy of 'A Christmas Carol' from Charles Dickens to William Macready
- Label
- ‘Presentation copies’ were copies the author gifted to family and friends. This copy was given to Dickens's friend William Macready as a gift on New Year's Day, 1844. William was an actor and stage manager who performed at many theatres including the Drury Lane theatres, which he took over management of in 1841. It was Macready who found work at Drury Lane for John Overs, the working-class cabinet-maker Dickens had befriended whose tuberculosis prevented him working as a carpenter.
