- Dickens was first translated into Japanese in 1885, and he continues to have a large fan base in the country today. Manga de Dokuha was a series of manga (illustrated stories, similar to comics) which adapted literary classics such as War and Peace, King Lear, Moby-Dick, and A Christmas Carol. It also adapted nonfiction works like The Origin of Species, Das Kapital, and, controversially, Mein Kampf.
