Brief description
A Tale of Two Cities in Mandarin Chinese, Yiwen Classics edition
Label
According to the Unesco 'Index Translationum', Dickens is the ninth most translated author into Chinese in the world. He was first translated in 1907 by Lin Shu, who did not speak English but had the stories read aloud to him and copied into Chinese. Like his popularity in the Soviet Union, this may have partly been because of his sympathetic portrayal of the poor and criticism of the wealthy elite.
