Dickens began banking with Coutts & Company Bank on 20 November 1837 whilst living at 48 Doughty Street and would stay with them the rest of his life. Dickens was close friends with Angela Burdett-Coutts, the wealthy heiress of the Coutts banking family, and the two co-founded what they referred to as an 'asylum' or shelter for women in poverty, including prostitutes, called Urania Cottage. All the Year Round was the weekly magazine Dickens founded and edited.
