- A letter from Dickens to Thomas Beard, one of his oldest friends. Dickens encloses tickets presumably for the theatre which Dickens attended every night if possible. He mentions his old editor, Captain Holland, who was the first to publish a story by Dickens. Dickens’s signature has been carefully cut out – it was highly prized by fans of his work. A "Rubber" meant playing a game, probably cards, best-out-of-three.
