- A letter from Dickens apologising to Thomas Beard, one of his oldest friends. Dickens was at the theatre and missed Beard’s visit. Dickens attended the theatre every night he could. Dickens discusses various offers to work at newspapers – he was looking to leave The Morning Chronicle and in fact resigned a week after writing this letter, going on to edit Bentley’s Miscellany.
