- Thomas Beard, one of Dickens's oldest friends, was going to a meeting on Dickens's behalf to help resolve the ongoing dispute between Dickens and his boss at Bentley's Miscellany, Richard Bentley. In a previous letter, Dickens asked Bentley for a copy of his employment agreement. Having received it, he doubts he ever signed such a document, possibly suspecting it is fraudulent.
