The christening had been delayed since June due to the shocking death of Mary Hogarth, Dickens's teenaged sister-in-law. Dickens sent many such letters to friends, always giving Charley nicknames like "the living wonder", "the infant phenomenon", and "an infant whose name is velocity, and nature, genius".
