- The Dickens family loved to entertain. Here Dickens invites Thomas Beard to a Sunday dinner at 5pm and, on behalf of Catherine, asks that Beard’s sister comes too. Charles had just finished writing The Old Curiosity Shop, and was embarking on Barnaby Rudge, but he wrote to another friend that month of “the extreme difficulty of fixing my thoughts on Barnaby after so recently shutting up the ‘Shop’.
