- Letter from Charles Dickens to John Hollingshead, 4 November 1859

- After Dickens recieved a reply from William Howitt recommending a list of haunted houses (see A973), he forwarded it onto his friend John Hollingshead with this letter. John Hollingshead shared Dickens’s scepticism for haunted houses. After narrowing down the list (which is not part of the museum's collection), Hollingshead visited a pub in Holborn but stated it was ‘only Haunted by the claims of brewers and distillers’. Hollingshead, Dickens and their friend the author Wilkie Collins then visited another house Howitt recommended. Yet, none of the locals knew of the supposed hauntings that took place there, causing Dickens to write to Howitt ‘I have been to Cheshunt, and have found myself no nearer to a haunted house than I was before’.
