- Dickens provides his illustrator, George Cruikshank, with detailed instructions for an illustration in the next instalment of Oliver Twist. Dickens had strong ideas about what he wanted the images to look like and on this occasion, he sent instructions before he’d finished writing it. Cruikshank’s began doodling on the back of the letter what would become ‘Mr Bumble and Mrs Coney taking tea’.

My Dear Cruikshank
I have described a small kettle for one on the fire -- a small black teapot on the table with a little tray & so forth -- and a two ounce tin tea cannister. Also a shawl hanging up -- and the cat & kittens before the fire.
