- In this letter to his good friend Thomas Beard Dickens is inviting him to supper for a leg of mutton at his house in Marylebone. Beard was one of Dickens's oldest friends, their friendship lasting from Dickens's teenage years until his death in 1870 at age 58. Dickens relied upon Beard’s advice and in turn often advised him. He began his career in journalism with Beard at the Morning Chronicle in 1834 through Beard's recommendation and Beard was his best man at his wedding and godfather to his eldest son.
