- In this letter to Frederick M Evans, one half of Dickens's publishers Bradbury & Evans, Dickens mentions that he was slightly behind on the latest instalment of David Copperfield, which he was writing at the time. He encloses some pages of the text to be forwarded to Mr Bernhard Tauchnitz, who is writing a German translation of David Copperfield. Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz was a member of the Tauchnitz publishing family. Unlike many publishers of the day they paid foreign authors (such as Dickens) royalties, something now standard practice under international copyright laws.

My Dear Evans.
I hope to finish on Tuesday next. Any day, after that, that will suit you best, I shall be delighted to see you. Write to me a day before, that I may not be roaming anywhere, when you come.
I promised Mr. Bernhard Taüchnitz of Leipzig that he should have the proofs of No. 6 as soon as ever they should be ready--with a view to his first volume of Copperfield, which he proposes to bring out at the end of this month, and which he wants to get the end of, translated into German for that purpose, with all dispatch. As I told him somewhere about the 15th. would be the probable time, and as I am a little late this month, it has struck me that it would be a convenience to him to have the first sheet at once. Therefore, will you get the corrections I have marked on it (inclosed) very carefully made--the half page that is wanting, carefully made up from the inclosed folio of MS--and send it to him by post directly, with an intimation that you will forward the concluding sheet as soon as it is ready?
