- A letter from Dickens to Thomas Beard, one of his oldest friends, dated 16 December. Dickens and his younger brother Frederick had just moved into No 13, Furnival's Inn (the lease was signed 2 December) and Dickens had planned a dinner party with Beard and others. However, returning from outside London he finds his furniture has not been delivered yet. He suggests deferring dinner until Saturday.

Dear Tom.
On returning from the City to-day, I found, contrary to my expectation, that my man had not sent. As I have no dishes, no curtains, and no french polish, I think we had better, for all our comforts, defer the projected flare until Saturday -- on one condition; namely that my seeing you on that Evening, will not prejudice your dining with me on Sunday.
Will you do me the favor to mention this, to your father, Nat[,] Frank, and Will -- I should have said Thursday, but as I presume there is a chance of one of us going to Maidstone, I think it better to fix our conviviality for an Evening which I hope will be beyond the reach of disappointment.
Pray tell your father, that I place implicit reliance upon him; and be kind enough to remember on your own account that I have got some really extraordinary french brandy.
