- This short letter was written by Dickens to William Makepeace Thackeray, a fellow author who was equally famous to Dickens in popularity in their day. He is best known for the novel Vanity Fair, whose title was later used for a popular magazine. Dickens reminds Thackeray of dinner plans the two had made for the following Sunday. In later decades the two men would fall out and exchange insults, with Thackeray also expelling one of Dickens's friends from the prestigious Garrick Club they all attended.
