- In the 1840s Dickens was part of the 'Shakespeare Birthplace Committee' (sometimes called the 'Shakespeare House Committee') which sought to purchase Shakespeare's home in Stratford. He formed an amateur theatre group to put on performances and raise funds for the purchase. In this letter Dickens passes on a financial query to Peter Cunningham, his friend, treasurer of the Committee, and fellow actor who had acted alongside Dickens in the play Not So Bad as We Seem.

My Dear Cunningham.
Not remembering who are the bankers of the Shakespeare House Committee, I have written to confess my ignorance in that wise to the writer of the enclosed: adding that I have forwarded his letter to you who are the Honorary Treasurer of the renowned Body, and who (I have said) will have the pleasure of communicating with him.
