- Brief description
- Partial manuscript of 'Nicholas Nickleby', Chapter 9, 1838
- Label
- Handwritten manuscript of chapter nine of Nicholas Nickleby, published in monthly parts from 1838 to 1839. In this copy Dickens references the Bloomsbury Foundling Hospital in a sentence he later removed. The Hospital was near Dickens’s 48 Doughty Street home. He has written in black ink with a quill – he switched to blue ink in the 1850s but never adopted a nib or ‘steel’ pen even when they became popular.
