- Thomas Beard was Dickens's oldest and longest-abiding friendship, from his journalism days until his death. In late 1845 Dickens was attempting to find financial backing to launch a new newspaper. The chief backer was Joseph Paxton, designer of the famous Crystal Palace, but here Dickens mentions financial turmoil in the City of London which has put the paper's financial stability in danger. Ultimately the paper, The Daily News, would successfully launch the following year and continue to print until the 1930s.
