- Much of Dickens's popularity came from his ability to observe the world around him and capture it, especially the unfairness of the society he saw around him. This manuscript is for a story which appeared in his weekly magazine All The Year Round. It depicts poverty and sickness in London's East End and a hospital opened by a husband and wife - the East London Hospital for Children - to help them. Dickens's essay helped raise money for the hospital which went on to become part of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children, which operated until 2014.
