- On 3 January 1849 the Dickenses held a dinner at Devonshire Terrace to celebrate the success of The Haunted Man - the fifth and final of Dickens's Christmas stories - the first and most famous being A Christmas Carol. The Haunted Man sold 18,000 copies on its first day. This invitation was sent to family friend Thomas Beard, written on mourning paper as Dickens's sister Fanny had died the previous September.
