- This letter from Dickens's friend Thomas Beard to the artist Daniel Maclise is in shorthand. Dickens and Beard both used shorthand as journalists to write quicker than normal handwriting. In this letter Beard asks to buy the painting Girl at the Waterfall on behalf of "Mr. So-and-so" (Dickens). Dickens did not want Maclise to lower the price or give it for free out of friendship to Dickens, hence the good-natured deception.
