- Georgina Hogarth, Dickens’s sister-in-law, affectionately writes to Frank Beard, long-time family friend and medical adviser, soon after Dickens’s death. Hogarth asks whether any of Beard’s patients would benefit from some of Dickens’s ‘quite new’ stockings, after donating his old ones to the poor. She also explains she’ll be moving to Weybridge in a month with her cousin after leaving Gad’s Hill Place, the country house in Kent where she lived with Dickens as his housekeeper for the last 14 years of his life.

Gad's Hill

My dear Frank,
Very very many thanks for your kind note. I was so glad that Mr. Ouvry went to to you himself, he is one of the kindest of men, but I am very sorry he still found you sill, but I hope you [illegible]
I am very happy that the Orange Brandy and the cigars arrived safely, and that they give you pleasure as a remembrance of old days. I thought they would.
I have got two pairs of elastic stockings of dearest Charles, quite new, they had been sent [illegible] a month before his death, and I doubt whether he ever had them on. His old ones, of which there were several pairs, I have given away to poor people here who wear them. but these seem too good for that. If you should happen amongst your patients, to know of any one - less well off, who is obliged to wear these expensive things, and on whom they would be well bestowed, will you let me know, and I will send them to you.
Will you give me love to Wilkie. Tell him I was greatly touched, as were the girls, by a note I had from him the other day. I will not fail to write to him, after the dreadful trial of leaving this dear place is over. We go on the 1st August. We have taken a [illegible] furnished house at Weybridge, my cousin and I together for two months from [illegible] go up and down to London [illegible]
