- Georgina Hogarth was the sister of Dickens's wife, Catherine. She moved in to look after the couple's children and house while they travelled to America in 1842 and remained as Dickens's housekeeper until his death in 1870, even after he separated from her sister in 1858. Dickens's separation was very public (largely because he published a public letter about it) and many speculated Dickens was having an affair with Georgina. Dickens allegedly had a doctor produce a 'certificate of virginity' for Georgina to disprove the allegations. Georgina spent the years following Dickens's death co-signing and authenticating items that belonged to Dickens.
