Dickens had a complex relationship with his father John, who was constantly in debt. He borrowed from Dickens's friends or sent the bill to Dickens and his publishers. Nonetheless when Dickens launched The Daily News newspaper in 1846 he hired John to manager the paper's reporters, as John had been a journalist himself. John seemed to take the role seriously. Here he writes to John Towne Danson, one of the newspaper's reporters, the Monday after the paper's first issue asking him to condense his 'Leader' - the editorial article at the front of a newspaper.
