Catherine Dickens writes to Mary Ann Cruickshank, the wife of George Cruikshank, illustrator of Oliver Twist. Charles and George were friends and appeared in amateur theatre performances together. This letter was for Catherine to advise Mary Ann to get to Miss Kelly's Theatre in Soho early to beat the crowds. Dickens's amateur troupe was performing Ben Jonson's comedy Every Man in his Humour. It is unclear from this letter if George was in the cast or attending with Mary Ann in the audience.

Tuesday Morning

My dear Mrs Cruikshank,
There will probably be many carriages in Dean Street on Saturday night;and the half hour mentioned in the bill as the time for sitting down is so very short, that the door will be opened at half past 6 instead of seven. I think it best to tell you that if you can manage to be there before seven, you will certainly enter more comfortably.
