- Matilda Butler was Catherine's maid at Gloucester Crescent, where she lived after she and Dickens separated. Butler left Catherine’s service after she married, but they kept in touch and Catherine left her a pair of gold sailor hat sleeve studs in her will. Here Catherine thanks her for the birthday present she sent: ‘I have just received your and Mr Butler’s very pretty and acceptable present; also your good wishes on my birthday. Very many thanks to you both for your kind remembrance of this.’

My dear Matilda
I have just received your and Mr Butler's very pretty and acceptable present; also your good wishes on my birthday.
Very many thanks to you both for this kind remembrance of me.
I hope you are well and have recovered from your cold. It is a long time since I have seen you.
I had hoped to go to Wellington St during Mrs Charles's [stay in town] but was prevented by the bad weather. With kind regards to you and your husband, believe me dear Matilda, your sincere friend
