- Charles Dickens launched his weekly magazine, Household Words, in 1850. He edited (or "conducted") it and insisted that no authors' names would appear alongside contributions. Dickens was keen to ensure he had editorial control after his experience at Bentley's Miscellany, which he left after long disputes with the owner, Richard Bentley, over control and pay.
