- Brief description
- Binoculars owned by Charles Dickens
- Label
- Dickens was given this pair of binoculars or 'field glasses' by Georgina Hogarth — his sister-in-law, housekeeper, and friend — before his first trip to America in 1842. In American Notes Dickens mentions passing the time on the return voyage by using 'glasses' to watch boats and dolphins. It is possible these were the 'glasses' he used.
